Peace Action Calls on
Citizens to Protest Bush's War and "Failure of Democracy."
Washington, DC: "We are witnessing
the structural and moral failure of American democracy. It is time
for those who value democracy to take to the streets. On Saturday,
October 26, 2002 at 11 am, there is a anti-war rally being organized
by a group called International Answer and will include a march from
the mall to the White House. Peace Action is encouraging its members
and other citizens concerned about the Bush administration's rush
towards unilateral war with Iraq to attend," said Kevin Martin
Executive Director of Peace Action.
Peace Action members and affiliates are
meeting before the rally to march together. At 10:45 am, on Saturday
the 26th, Peace Action members from across the country will meet on
the Mall across the street from the corner of 20th Street and Constitution
Ave.
"Despite the fact that correspondence
to congressional offices are overwhelmingly against a unilateral war
in Iraq, Bush's blank check for war was rubber stamped by the House
296-133. The pro-war forces of the White House and the Republican
controlled House were aided and abetted by 81 Democrats including
current and post-election Minority Leader Dick Gephardt. The Senate
subsequently voted for war by the margin 75-23," continued Martin.
"The people are not being represented
by those in Congress who are elected and paid to do so. These two
votes for war were a failure of representative democracy in this country.
Now, we are calling for people to come to Washington D.C. to demonstrate
their opposition to the congressional majority's failure of leadership
and to demand that there be no attack on Iraq," concluded Martin.
Peace Action, (formerly Sane and The
Freeze), is the nation's largest peace and disarmament organization.
