MAY 1 VIGIL AT TRENTON MAKES BRIDGE TO MARK FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF BUSH’S MISSION ACCOMPLISHED SPEECH April 30, 2008
The Princeton-based Coalition for Peace Action (CFPA), with 17 chapter-affiliates in central/southern New Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania, will hold a Peace Vigil from 4:00-5:00 PM on Thursday, May 1 at the Trenton Makes Bridge between Trenton and Morrisville, PA.

GAO Concerned Pentagon Too Reliant on Expensive Private Contractors
Amid rising concerns of recession and stagflation the Government Accountability Office released a report yesterday expressing concerns about the increasing reliance by the Pentagon on private contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among their main concerns were accountability & oversight of military contracts as well as the rising cost of maintaining those contracts.

On March 19, 2008, the Central Ohio Peace Network (COPN) will host the IRAQ WAR MEMORIAL MARCH and PEACE FORUM at the Ohio Statehouse Atrium (Use the South Entrance). (Washington, DC) Peace Action capitalizes on a tight Democratic race to highlight the nuances of each candidate’s stance on Peace Issues. The race for the Democratic nomination for President continues today as people from the District, Maryland, and Virginia go to the polls. The top contenders in the Democratic race are still running the race in a virtual tie allowing primary voters in the Mid-Atlantic to have an unprecedented role in the election process.

Local Activist Ed Lewinson Sentenced to 90 Days for Protest at the School of the Americas in Georgia
Ed Lewinson, 78, a member of the NJPA Board and co-chair of the Peace Education Committee, was sentenced to 90 days in Federal prison and fined $500 last week for trespassing at Fort Benning, Georgia, in a November 2007 protest which demanded the closing of the School of the Americas (renamed Western Hemisphere
Institute for Security Cooperation). This was the fourth time that Ed had been arrested, but his first conviction since in previous years the government refused to prosecute due to his blindness. Ten other protesters were also sentenced with Ed.

Department of Energy Calls for Public Comment on Complex Transformation SPEIS
Peace Action Responds with a call for Nuclear Abolition
(Washington, DC – 1/16/08) – The Department of Energy has dedicated a 90 day comment period to the Bush Administration’s proposed nuclear weapons production facility formally known as Complex 2030. This comes despite Congressional action zeroing out funding for the reliable replacement warhead, a new nuclear weapon, associated with the $150 million nuclear complex.

Press Conference on Verified Voting Issues in New Jersey Presidential Primary 11 AM on Tuesday, January 15 in Room 109 of State House in Trenton
The Princeton-based Coalition for Peace Action (CFPA) will have a press conference at 11 AM on Tuesday, January 15 in Room 109 of the State House to present their latest initiatives and analysis of voting in New Jersey. They will request emergency actions to instill greater confidence in New Jersey’s February 5 Presidential Primary, the first time in decades that New Jersey will vote in time to affect the outcome of the major party presidential selection process.

Spiritual Pilgrimages of Peacemaking—An Interfaith Retreat
Spiritual Pilgrimages of Peacemaking is the title of a one-day Interfaith retreat offered on Saturday, February 2 from 10 AM to 4 PM at Erdman Conference Center of Princeton Theological Seminary, located at 12 Library Place in Princeton. It will draw on the richness of a wide range of faith traditions to engage participants in tapping a variety of spiritual resources in their pilgrimages of peacemaking. The retreat is co-sponsored by Fellowship in Prayer and the Coalition for Peace Action, both based in Princeton.
