Take Action for Afghanistan April 4 - 6

Taking a Stand

Peace Action, and organizations like ours, exist to push the confines of our foreign policy toward more peaceful, justice, and sustainable solutions to security issues.   In short, we take a firm stand against all forms of violence – even if it is not popular.  Peace Action was one of the first organizations to take a stand against the troop surge into Afghanistan because we know war won’t work.

President Obama believes that U.S. troops can change their mission overnight – from an occupying force to police trainers and welcome guests.  Kevin Martin, the executive director of Peace Action said it best, “an Afghan soldier fired at and killed two American troops before turning the gun on himself.  That is an indication, to me, that increased military engagement or training in Afghanistan is a recipe for a lengthy, unwinnable quagmire like Iraq and Vietnam.”

The United Nations recently agreed, concluding there was not a military solution in Afghanistan.  ‘”I've always said to those that talk about the military surge ... what we need most of all is a political surge, more political energy," Kai Eide, the U.N. special envoy to Afghanistan, told a news conference in Kabul.”

We create and promote petitions to our government as a way of showing the political advantages of taking a stand.  Each name is used to educate Congress and the President of the wide-sweeping support for a better plan.  Sign our petition for a better plan in Afghanistan and take a stand for peace.
