Organizing for a World Free from Nuclear Weapons

The president’s budget request for 2015 provides a blueprint for nuclear weapons spending at odds with his promise to “take concrete steps towards a world without nuclear weapons”.

While crucial domestic spending faces yet another round of deep reductions, the cost for ‘modernizing’ America’s nuclear infrastruture, nuclear weapons and delivery systems continues to climb.

Over the next decade, the US government plans to spend over $200 billion to modernize nuclear delivery vehicles, warheads and production facilities.  This includes a whole new class of ballistic missile submarines, new long-range bombers and new cruise missiles.  Also on the drawing board is the next-generation land-based Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM).  And of course, new nuclear weapon production facilities to produce new nuclear weapons for at least the remainder of this century.

Our allies in Congress are stepping up to take these misguided priorities head on. Companion bills have been introduced in the House and Senate that would each save $100 billion in the next ten years by reducing the number of nuclear weapons and cutting nuclear weapons spending.

You probably recall Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) introduced the SANE Act (S. 2070) which Peace Action supported last year.

This year, we also have a House bill introduced by Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR).  That bill, the Reduce Expenditures in Nuclear Infrastructure Now Act (H.R. 4107) is called the REIN-IN Act for short.

The success of these bills depends on securing co-sponsors and that’s where you come in.  We need your help to get your representatives on board supporting cuts to nukes.

Here are the suggested messages:

Your US Representative:

”My name is ___ and I live in ____. I am calling to ask Rep. ____ to cosponsor H.R. 4107, the REIN-IN Act, to save money by cutting wasteful nuclear weapons spending.”

Your US Senators:

”My name is ___ and I live in ____. I am calling to ask Sen. ____ to cosponsor S. 2070, the SANE Act, to save money by cutting wasteful nuclear weapons spending.”

Groups all over the country are working together to get cosponsors on these bills. We need your help to keep phones on Capitol Hill ringing off the hook calling for cuts to nukes.

Stop Wasting our Tax Dollars on Nuclear Overkill.
Hold President Obama to his pledge to lead us to a future free of nuclear weapons.

Call your Senators and Representative
The Capitol Switchboard (202) 224-3121
Tell your Senators to co-sponsor the SANE Act, (S. 2070)
Tell your Representative to co-sponsor the Rein-In Act (H.R. 4107)
