U.S. Injects $65 Billion in Arms to Middle East
Weapons proliferation is sure to inflame tense relationships in the Region.
The proposed $20 billion arms deal to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates announced this week is only the tip of the warhead. This arms deal happens in conjunction with two military aid deals. Under the agreement Israel will receive $30 billion and Egypt will receive an additional $13 billion. In total, the U.S. will inject air-to-air missiles, Joint Direct Attack Munitions, and other sophisticated weaponry worth $65 BILLION to the Middle East.
The Bush administration is brokering this deal: DESPITE administration concessions that Saudi Arabia has played a role funding insurgents in Iraq; DESPITE the tension it has created between the volatile states of Israel and Iran; and, DESPITE the obvious danger increasing weaponry in the region will bring to our troops in Iraq. |

Iraqi People Speak Out Against U.S. backed Oil Law
Proposed Law would privatize Iraqi resources for up to 30 years
Oil accounts for more than 90% of government revenue, and is the main driver of Iraq’s economy. Under pressure from the U.S. government, the Iraqi cabinet has endorsed the controversial oil law, which now awaits approval in the Parliament. Yet among Iraqis, the law faces extensive opposition, including from two of the law’s three original authors-as well as more than 100 of Iraq’s most senior oil experts, the powerful oil unions, and other religious and secular civil society organizations.
Iraqis oppose plans to open the country's oilfields to foreign investment by a factor of two to one, according to a poll released today. Iraqis are united in this view: there are no ethnic, sectarian or geographical groups that prefer foreign companies.
The poll also finds that most Iraqis feel kept in the dark about the oil plans – with fewer than a quarter feeling adequately informed about a proposed new law to govern Iraq's oil sector. |

Nation Commemorates the Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Peace Community Take Action to prevent future destruction with Congressional Action
On August 6th, 1945 and, again, on August 9th, 1945, the United States exploded nuclear bombs killing more than 200,000 people in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Today, the Bush Administration is asking for taxpayer dollars to create a new generation of nuclear weapons, misleadingly named the Reliable Replacement Warhead (RRW). Peace Action Staten Island commemorated the anniversary with “Project Shadow” to bring attention to the Bush Administration’s new nuclear weapons. (Video)
Through a truly bi-partisan effort, the House of Representatives eliminated funding for RRW in the Bush Administration's Budget request for Fiscal Year 2008. While the Senate has not yet voted on appropriations for the RRW, Senator Feinstein has introduced S.1914, a bill which stops funding the RRW until a new nuclear policy and posture review are completed by March 2010. This new policy review will include public hearings and input by outside experts. Make sure that the Senate follows the House by eliminating funding for RRW. Tell your Senator to support S.1914, the Nuclear Policy and Posture Review Act of 2007. |
