In the coming weeks, the Senate will
deal with a number of nuclear related issues, including funding for
new nuclear weapons. Tell your Senator that the US must lead a genuine
effort to eliminate the threat from weapons of mass destruction. You
can use our sample below.
Dear Senator _____________
The President claimed the invasion of
Iraq was about stopping the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
We are all rightfully concerned about the spread of nuclear weapons
to North Korea.
The Bush administrations approach
to nuclear policy, however, undermines our nations leadership, destroys
our credibility and encourages nuclear proliferation.
How can our nation tell the world that
we need to stop the proliferation of these weapons while building
new ones ourselves? How can we lead efforts to control weapons of
mass destruction when the administration wants to break a global moratorium
and resume nuclear testing?
Hypocrisy is a poor substitute for leadership.
We face no greater threat than the threat
posed by nuclear weapons. The only way to be safe from this threat
is to destroy as much of the stockpiles as possible and secure those
facilities that make nuclear materials. Building nuclear weapons wont
make us safer, but it will encourage other countries to develop their
own. Constructing a phony missile defense wont protect us from
weapons delivered in a suitcase, or a truck or a ship.
The former head of US Nuclear forces
Lt. General Lee Butler said it best when he declared "There is
no security in nuclear weapons. It is a fools game."
Please demonstrate your commitment to
a foreign policy that will promote lasting security by signing Peace
Actions Pledge for a New
Foreign Policy.
Yours Sincerely,
(your name)
