Women Speak Out Against War
According to a recent
Zogby poll, there is a large gender gap on the issue of invading
Iraq; women are twice as likely to oppose sending US troops to
Iraq than are men.
It is clear to many women that the
United States' aggressive policies in Iraq, and elsewhere, are
making the world less stable and less safe. These policies will
directly and indirectly escalate violence at home and abroad,
and women will be disproportionately affected. For women, this
means more physical harm, sexual violence, displacement, and a
much harder struggle to meet the needs of their families.
In fact, an invasion of Iraq threatens
to displace 2 million Iraqis, on top of the 1.1 million who are
already refugees. War is also likely to upset the food distribution
system in Iraq, putting the 14 million dependent on this system
at risk. This says nothing of the tens of thousands who will be
killed by intense bombing campaigns.
Many women realize that there is
nothing humane about war, nothing democratic about using force
to solve a problem. What we really need is a foreign policy we
can all live with: one based on human rights and democracy, disarmament,
and international cooperation.
Tell
your members of Congress:
The Bush doctrine of unilateral policy and pre-emptive attacks
is destabilizing the globe and further threatening the safety
of Iraqis and Americans alike.
I urge you to stop an invasion of
Iraq and to lead our nation toward a foreign policy that we can
all live with:
- Support Human Rights and Democracy
- Reduce and Control the Nuclear
Threat
- Cooperate with the World Community
