Why Create A Stand Alone Bill? After we have a majority of Congress signed onto the letter the Democrats can vote in caucus to establish this language as their party stance on Iraq. While not obligatory, Representatives are free to vote as they like, this allows us to push the language into a stand-alone bill which may have some traction in Congress. Even without passing it, the creation of a stand-alone bill is a touchstone to show the will of the American people on the Hill. It is a chance for us, as members of the peace movement, to point to candidates seeking re-election and ask, "Did you vote to fund a troop withdrawal from Iraq and to end this quagmire?" In the upcoming and future elections we MUST pinpoint where and when the candidates have stood with us and against our dictatorial president. |
